Team NYC Takes the Caribbean Hoopfest Recap

NYC represented well in the Carribean Hoopfest, which was held in Montego Bay, Jamaica a couple weeks ago in August. Team NYC, is an alumni of the iDtop4 event this past summer. They defeated Team Canada off a late rally to force overtime. After that it was all Team NYC. No team really saw a significant lead throughout the entire game as it was back and forth throughout. Team Canada took a 6 point lead however with just under 3 minutes left in regulation. That was the biggest lead for either side but Team NYC quickly diminished it and cut Canada’s lead to one with 21 seconds. Overtime was forced by Team NYC and they never looked back defeating Team Canada 77-69.

Coach Donald Francoise of Team NYC

Donald Francois, is the creator of the Carribean Hoopfest and runs the event every year. Francois also coaches Team NYC and has been coaching for many years and is currently coaching with the freshman team at Archbishop Molloy HS in New York City. He explained to iLuvBball over the phone, how important he believes this event is. Not only is it about spreading the love of the game all over the world, but also about exposure. He says that there is still room for improvement with talent and quality of play but he believes it will grow with time. The event is also making huge strides worldwide with additions of more teams from countries such as Trinidad and Tobago among others. He also plans on expanding the event into multiple cities in multiple countries. Next year he plans to have the event held over a few days in 3 cities in Jamaica including Kingston and Montego Bay, where the event has been held the past three years. Sponsorships are also on the rise for the Carribean Hoopfest as well. Francois told iLuvBball he has been in contact with Adidas and SLAM magazine to help sponsor the event in the future.

Francois has been a supporter of iLuvBball and has known Rodini from iLuvBball for almost 15 years and their relationship has grown throughout the years through their competitiveness and love for the game and also seeing eachother very often at AAU programs around the country.
