Today’s the big day! Sunday March 12th, 2017, the Island’s top teams of every class will be descending on Island Federal Credit Union Arena at Stony Brook University to punch their tickets to the NYSPHSAA State championship games up in Binghampton. The first matchup will be the exciting and high flying reigning Class A champions Elmont Spartans will be going for a repeat as the NY State Champs, but the first task at hand must be to get past a program that is no stranger to the state championships themselves, the Southampton Mariners. The Mariners don’t really have a superstar; they are a more balanced attack. The 3 scoring leaders are Andre Franklin at 14.8 PPG, Micah Snowden with 14.7 points per game, and Chad Pike 14.2 PPG. A team like that is very dangerous because it difficult to prepare for a team that doesn’t depend on any one “star”  and on any given night any player can explode for a scoring run. But reigning champs on the other hand has an All-Long Island athlete in K.C. Ndefo who averages a team high 21 points per game, then Victor Olawoye who’s good for 15.3 PPG (even though he’s banged up right now with an ankle injury). The next scorer is a single digit scorer in Jalen Miller is just under 10 PPG (9.4 PPG to be exact). So it will be a team effort, or will the dynamic duo of Ndefo & Olawoye be too much for the Mariners to handle? We shall see!
