Southampton Stuns Elmont

Where’s Tom Brady’s equipment guy when you need him ?!

The first few minutes of this game was a sloppy, slippery ball, turnover fest ….

Elmont’s defensive speed seemed to begin to swing the game to their favor as the first period ensued. Frosh pg Javon Santos had 4 points and 2 assists. And , despite two blown uncontested layups, the Spartans took an 11-6 first quarter lead.

Southampton seemed an unlikely Suffolk Champion. In fact, in that County’s ” Tournament of Champions “, the Mariners were slapped down by Hills East, 87-71 on March 5th. According to the report by LIbasketball.com, Southampton couldn’t handle  Hills’ defensive pressure.

I guess Elmont didn’t read that report.

Actually, I’m sure they didn’t read that report because in it, Ted Thomas calls Andre Franklin’s 19 points in a tough loss ” a heroic performance “.

Franklin came off the Southampton bench to hit 4 threes in a 19-11 second period for the Mariners.

They led at halftime 25-22.

I like to figure out what coaching adjustments will be made at halftime, and how the game will unfold.

Southampton’s point guard, Timmy Alejo, a 6’2 senior was shaky on an ankle sprained the week before.

I expected Elmont to pressure Alejo, trap in the half court and extend pressure full.

That did not happen.

Elmont scored only 1 point in the first 6 minutes of the second half .

At the end of the third quarter, the Mariners led 42-27.

The Spartans pressed in desperation in the fourth and scored 26 points in 8 minutes but it wasn’t enough in their 60-53 loss.

Elmont’s KC Ndefo had 26 points, 13 on free throws.

Southampton’s Andre Franklin (pictured below) scored 29 points, including 7 threes!!!

Congratulations to the Southampton Mariners!!

They played with tremendous energy and grit today, remaining focused on their desired outcome!

They are the Long Island “A” Champions ?‼️
