The Braves Get Knighted

The most successful season in Syosset boys varsity basketball history since 1970 came to an abrupt halt last night.

The Knights from Uniondale jumped to an early 11-4 lead.

Syosset layups by Mike Stanco and Griffin Halpern gave the hundreds of red clad Syo followers hope …. but, it wasn’t meant to be.

At the end of one period, it was 16-8 Uniondale. And at halftime it was 35-15 Uniondale.

What happened ?

These teams battled for conference supremacy during the regular season with the Knights winning a low scoring contest at home .

Syosset then prevailed in their own gym where they shoot so well.

The consensus of the coaches gathered at SUNY last night was that the Knights defended as if protecting their valiant history.

It’s funny how observers will say : ” Uniondale has experience in these games!”

Huh ?

Coach Diana started 3 sophomores in this Final 4 game.

Craig Brown , 17 points, and Zion Styles, 15 points led the way offensively and were tenacious defensively!

If history can be used as a partial explanation, let’s realize that Tom Diana did gather his team in practice and point to their past decade of championship banners.

The Knights played as if energized by all those alumni who played successfully before them.

It was a gutsy move by the Uniondale coaching staff to start 3 10th graders from the season’s outset. There were shaky moments but four months later, they commanded an upperclassmen presence on the floor.

Really a fabulous man to man defensive performance by Uniondale last night, holding Braves’ scorers Weiner ( 1 ) and Kula ( 2 ) way below their averages.

And, congrats to Uniondale junior guard Danny Ashley…. 19 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists.

Well done Knights!

Uniondale will face Westbury for the Nassau County AA Championship ….. Saturday 6:30pm at Hofstra.
